Competency Profiles
Downloadable PDF
Competency Profiles and Occupational Profiles serve as a comprehensive “wish list” of skills and knowledge that employers value in their workforce. For entry-level workers, the Occupational Profile outlines the fundamental skills and abilities necessary to start in the industry. For more experienced workers, the Competency Profile reflects a deeper level of expertise developed through training and on-the-job experience, addressing the evolving needs of the value-added wood sector.
These profiles aggregate skills across all seven sub-sectors of the BC value-added wood industry. It’s important to note that no single employee is expected to possess all the skills listed, nor does any single sub-sector require all of them. Instead, these profiles provide a valuable foundation for employers to tailor their workforce needs by identifying the specific skills relevant to their sub-sector.
The seven sub-sectors include:
- Millwork
- Cabinets
- Furniture
- Prebuilt Homes
- Engineered Wood Products
- Log Home and Timber Frame
- Remanufactured Wood Products
From an employer’s perspective, these documents serve as practical tools for:
- Job Descriptions: Providing a basis for crafting clear and comprehensive job postings.
- Performance Management: Facilitating discussions with employees about their current skill levels and areas for improvement. These conversations can identify training opportunities, with future follow-ups to evaluate the effectiveness of training and its impact on performance.
Below are PDFs containing the two competency profiles—Entry-Level Worker and Skilled Worker—developed by the BC Wood industry to support workforce development and retention.
