Skilled Production Worker Program

During the Workforce Development Project, an Occupation Profile was developed for the Entry-Level Woodwork (Direct to Work Program) as well as a Competency Profile for the Skilled Production Woodworker (SPW Program).  These Profiles each clearly describe the competency requirements (knowledge and skills) for workers in the value-added wood manufacturing sector.

The competency descriptions were developed and validated by Value-Added Wood Industry employers, from both BC Wood members and non-member organizations, for each respective category of worker – Entry-Level Workers (new to the VAW Industry) and Skilled Production Workers (with 4 to 5 years of experience).

The development of the competencies was an iterative process, leading to a consensus agreement within the project review process.  The competencies, as described, are comprehensive for each worker category and represent a “wish list” of skills and abilities.  Every worker will not necessarily be expected to be proficient in all the described competencies in their category.  The curricula and training resources developed for each worker category were mapped to the described VAW manufacturing worker competencies.

The Skilled Production Worker Program equips  you with the tools and guidelines you need to assess these skills within your workforce, providing you with the opportunity to retain, grow and increase productivity within your organization.
