Skilled Production Worker Program

Competency Standards and Development Opportunities for Skilled Workers

During the Workforce Development Project, an Occupation Profile was developed for the Entry-Level Woodwork (Direct to Work Program) as well as a Competency Profile for the Skilled Production Woodworker (SPW Program).  These Profiles clearly describe the competency requirements (knowledge and skills) for workers in the value-added wood manufacturing sector.

The competency descriptions were developed and validated by Value-Added Wood Industry employers, from both BC Wood members and non-member organizations, for Skilled Production Workers (with 4 to 5 years of experience).

The development of the competencies was an iterative process, leading to a consensus agreement within the project review process.  The competencies, as described, are specific to each worker category and represent a “wish list” of skills and abilities.  Every SPW will not necessarily be expected to be proficient in all the described competencies.

The Skilled Production Worker Program provides competency standards to guide your learning needs assessment, as well as training modules and learning resources mapped to the described manufacturing worker competencies. Together, these tools and resources provide what you need to retain, grow and increase the productivity of your skilled workforce.
